Fabric stuck on my iron

I was ironing some stuff I was sewing a few weeks ago and wasn't paying attention and ironed over felt when the iron was super hot.
DOH!
It was the last thing I ironed so I didn't notice it until the next time I went to use the iron and put blue yuck all over one of my pieces.  ugh.  We only have one iron, it lives in our guest room and Hubby does use it to iron his shirts.  I do not iron clothes, I buy clothes that don't need to be ironed to wear them :) my mom would argue that some of them need to be ironed but I think she is wrong ;)

I did a search online to find out what to do. The internet said to put the iron on a low setting and scrape it off with a wooden spatula.  I used a wooden spoon.

Most of it came off on the low setting but the stuff up top was very stubborn and I had to crank the iron up higher and higher to get it off.  I am not going to lie, it was a little bit rough to get off.  At one point I considered buying a new iron, but I pressed on and kept scraping.  I ironed onto a damp towel when there was a lot of junk that scraped off hanging around.  I think that helped a little.  I was ironing on this waffle towel.  I think the texture helped.  It took about 20 minutes to get off.  I was hoping for a quick fix like ironing on newspaper or something but I don't think that would have done anything, that is just for wax.

My iron looks just like new again.  Just in time too because Hubby has shirts that he needs to iron.  I am glad I know what to do when this happens again.  We all know I am going to get fabric stuck to my iron again.  Hopefully this helps someone else from having to buy another iron.

yuck, yuck, yuck! My iron could use a good clean, but i'm just lazy. I haven't had fabric stuck to it, but I do get glue from fusible webbing, etc. on it quite frequently. I'm like you, I only use my iron for crafting!
